Cambridge Trust collaborations with University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi and Cambridge Trust have agreed to explore possible collaboration in the areas of staff and student exchange programs and the possibility of offering scholarships for students to pursue their university education abroad.

Prof. Hellen Pennant, Director, Cambridge Trust, observed that working with the University of Nairobi will go a long way in helping grow African research and collaborations.

Also speaking during a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, Cambridge Trust President, Dame Barbara Stocking. expressed the need to have students and professors from Cambridge visit the University of Nairobi and vice versa. Their maiden visit to Kenya and to the University of Nairobi was to understand how they can increase the number of Kenyan students’ enrollment in Cambridge University. She noted that there are over 500 student scholarships annually and urged students to apply for them.

Prof. Mbithi, the Vice-Chancellor, pledged to support the collaboration which will help the two universities in producing more ‘global citizens’. “Collaborations in teaching and research in universities is one way of producing global citizens,’ he observed.  He added that the University of Nairobi believes in collaboration and working with the people of the world in producing holistic graduates.

The Vice-Chancellor as well recalled with nostalgia how in the past, university staff would be trained in the universities abroad as part of the staff development program, where staff would be equipped with skills to help them in efficient and effective service delivery. The program is not as effective as it was in the years past.

Going forward, the two institutions agreed to explore agreements which will guide how the two institution will work together and the specific activities to be undertaken.

UoN and Cambridge Trust held talks today on how to enhance opportunities for Kenya students to study in the United Kingdom through scholarships and research collaborations.
