Engineering Fund Launched.

The School of Engineering, College of Architecture and Engineering, CAE, has launched an Engineering Fund, to support innovation and engineering student projects.

Speaking during the launch of the fund, Prof. Lucy Irungu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, noted that the best projects will be showcased during the forthcoming Nairobi Innovation Week, to be held in March, 2016.

Prof. Irungu also took the opportunity to thank the founder of the fund, Honourable Dr. Patrick Mweu Musimba, MP, Kibwezi West, who provided a prize fund aimed at encouraging student innovations that address challenges within the three thematic pillars of Kenya Vision 2030, namely economic, political and social. Prof. Irungu encouraged students and staff to aim higher and go for bigger funds that have been allocated to research activities from the National Research Fund, NRF. The National Research Fund allocates Ksh. 1.5 billion annually and the University of Nairobi has Ksh. 4.5 Billion research kitty.

On his part, the Principal, College of Agriculture and Engineering, Prof. Peter Ngau, thanked the Member of Parliament for his support towards University endevours. He urged other Kenyans to join the initiative to support students and academic endevours.

Dean, School of Engineering, Prof. Jackson Mbuthia, urged students to make use of the opportunity provided and work on their projects. The projects that will be favored include engineering prototypes and softwares. He said that those engineering projects will go a long way in helping the students in getting jobs easily or launching their own start-up businesses. The projects, he said, could be open doors for bigger funding opportunities in the future.

While working on projects, students were urged to embrace team spirit and multi-disciplinary approach to solving issues.
