University of Nairobi Sports Day

The University of Nairobi community composed of staff and students participated in the inaugural sports day at the University of Nairobi sports grounds. The event which was attended by among others, Mr. Haron Komen, Sports Director from the Ministry of Sports was held on February, 28, 2018.

Speaking during the event, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, observed that the University of Nairobi is a power house in academics and sports. The College of Education and External Studies, CEES, continue to lead in physical education training of teachers. He urged the government and policy makers to put in more efforts to nurture sports in the country by putting up more sports academies. In the recent past, the University of Nairobi took over the management of Koitatel University College and they were challenged to develop sports related courses in the college.

The Vice-Chancellor also urged corporates to support the development of sports in the university. The VC thanked corporate sponsors like Tecno mobile, Infinix, Kwese Television, Kericho Gold,  Primewood company and the University of Nairobi Alumni for supporting the event.

Chief Guest, Mr. Haron Komen, Sports Director from the Ministry of Sports called upon institutions of higher learning to establish sports scholarships that will encourage more students to pursue sports as a career as they nurture their talent.  He revealed that plans are underway to establish Annual Sports Day, where sportsmen and women will be celebrated.

Prof. Isaac Mbeche, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, noted that the university will continue to partner with many organizations in the country to promote sports.

The highlight of the day was a tag of war between staff from the Central Administration and the College of Health Sciences. Leading the teams were: Thomas Tenai from the College of Health Sciences and Karani Joshua Muchere from Central Administration. The Central team emerged victorious. Several teams that emerged winners were given trophies.  

The theme of the Sports Day was “Enhancing cohesiveness and wellness through sports. “
