Cancer book launch

A book on cancer treatment and diagnosis has been launched at the College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi.  The book is authored by Prof. Nicholas Othieno Abinya, from the Department of Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics.   Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi who was the Chief Guest during the book launch asked University dons to publish more or perish.

The book title is; Drug Management of Haematologic Neoplasms.

Speaking during the book launch, Prof. Mbithi said that cancer is a major public health problem and requires high quality healthcare. He congratulated the Kenya National Cancer Institute for rolling out cancer treatment and training of cancer specialists. Prof. Mbithi asked the College of Health Sciences to expedite fellowship programs and the training of cancer specialists. Despite the meagre resources channeled towards cancer research, Prof. Mbithi urged researchers to soldier on and keep up with new developments as cancer gets complicated.

Prof. Isaac Kibwage, the Principal, College of Health Sciences, congratulated Prof. Abinya for joining the long tradition of established authors from the college. He joined the Vice-Chancellor in requesting dons to publish more, as required by Commission for University Education. “By publishing, you establish yourself as an authority,” he said.

Prof. Nicholas Othieno Abinya, the author, noted that the book gives a background in cancer treatment, how the cancer cells behave and the medicines used in cancer treatment. The book highlights immune check pointing and reviews current cancer treatment methods.  Most lethal types of cancers have been covered in the book and their treatment methods. “The book takes pride in using locally generated data”, said Prof. Abinya.

The book is a valuable publication in the health sector. Cancer is a major medical concern and causing anguish to many people and the cost of cancer treatment is a big burden to many families. The book will empower medical practitioners and cancer specialists to cure cancer with minimal costs.
