UoN IP Audit gets a boost

The University of Nairobi Intellectual Property Office has received a 42,000 Swiss Franc (approximately Kshs. 4.2 M) donation from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for its Intellectual Property audit.

The University of Nairobi is in the process of auditing its intellectual property to the tune of approximately six million shillings. The cheque presentation was held today at the Council Chamber on July, 18, 2017.

Speaking during the presentation of the cheque, Mr. Sylvance A. Sange, Managing Director, Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) observed that the academia has a lot of potential in creating and preserving knowledge. Narrating his own experiences as a physics student, who was doing research work related to nuclear science during the 1990s, Mr. Asange noted that creating knowledge has no boundaries and urged students to take their student projects seriously as it could open immense opportunities for them upon completion of their studies.

University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, thanked KIPI for their effort in helping the University to secure the funding from WIPO. Prof. Mbithi was represented by Prof. Henry Mutoro, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics Affairs.

Prof. Lucy Irungu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Production and Extension, (DVC, RPE), reiterated the need to have an audit of the University’s Intellectual Property, to enable the university to tap from the vast wealth from the copyrights.

Going forward, all research taking place at the University of Nairobi will be audited. Upon successful audit, other universities will be encouraged to follow suit and benchmark with the university. The University of Nairobi has a lot of innovations and technologies which the country can greatly benefit from.

Alsop present during the meeting were; Prof. Madara Ogot, Director, Research and Extension, Prof. Julius W. Mwangi: Intellectual Property Coordinator and Mr. Peter Muturi, Public Relations Manager.
