University of Nairobi Students decide : SONU Election Day

The University of Nairobi students woke up as early as 6am to vote for their favourite candidates in the Students Organization of Nairobi University, SONU, Elections 2015/2016.

This has turned out to be one of the most hotly contested elections in the history of SONU and one of the most peaceful so far.

As the outgoing SONU Secretary General, Akach Jim, once noted, “Comrades are very peaceful. We are peace loving Kenyans.“

The powerful positions of the Chairman and Secretary General have drawn some of the strongest candidates, key among them is Babu Owino, the current SONU Chairman, who is vying again, for the 3rd time. Babu has served as SONU Chairman twice now. During his tenure, Babu was elected as the President of Kenya Universities Students Association and the President of African Universities Association.

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission, IIEC has been charged with the responsibility of administering the elections for the student body. Voting will be an all day affair and vote counting will be done late into the night. The swearing in is tomorrow, Saturday, March, 11, 2015  at the Graduation Square.

SONU has traditionally been the training ground where key politicians in the country honed their skills. Key among them include Members of Parliament like Senator James Orengo, Ababu Namwamba, Gitobu Imanyara, Johnson Sakaja, Kipchumba Murkomen among others.

We wish all the best to the candidates.
