About 400 university students from Kitui Central have benefited from six million shillings constituency development fund. The cheques were presented to the beneficiaries at the University of Nairobi Council Chambers, today, February 3, 2016.
Speaking during the presentation of cheques to the various public and private universities, the Member of Parliament for Kitui Central Hon. Joe Mutambu noted that universities face financial challenges and they need funding from various sources.
The cheques have been donated to the 47 universities in the country; both private and public. Hon Mutambu revealed that he will set aside 30 million shillings to support university students in the coming future.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi congratulated the MP for his gesture and urged other leaders to follow suit noting that funding higher education has continued to be a challenge. He urged the private sector and the corporate to join in financing university education.
Kitui Central CDF Board Chairman, Hon Elias Mbau, who is also a former Member of Parliament for Maragua constituency noted that 30% of the CDF funds will be channelled to support university education.
Also present during the meeting was Prof. Isaac Mbeche, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs. He urged students to give back to their constituency upon completion of their education and gaining employment.
