University of Nairobi discuss collaboration with Portuguese Embassy

The University of Nairobi has entered into discussions with the Diplomatic Mission Portugal, Nairobi, on the possibility of collaborating in offering the Portuguese language as an academic programme. The discussions were held today June, 2, 2016 at the Vice-Chancellors’ Committee room.

In addition, the two will explore areas of students, faculty and culture exchanges as well as translation and interpretation.

This was revealed when the Portuguese Charge d’Affaires in Nairobi, Mr. Francisco- Xavier Meireles paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi.

While welcoming the move, Prof. Mbithi said that the partnership is in line with the University’s strategic thinking in achieving its mandate. He said that through such partnerships, UoN is able to offer a global experience to both students and staff. Already the University teaches Chinese, German, French, Arabic and Korean languages.

Mr. Meireles said that the embassy is keen on exploring others areas of cooperation especially in cultural exchanges. He revealed that in order to facilitate the teaching of the Portuguese language, the Embassy will sponsor a lecturer to teach at UoN.

It was discussed and agreed that the two institutions will consult and draft a memorandum of understanding for signing and implementation.

Present at the meeting was Prof. Henry Mutoro, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Enos Njeru, Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Prof. Ephraim Wahome, Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts.
