The University of Nairobi Alumni Association (UONAA) is highly placed among the strategy and operational pillars of the University of Nairobi. It is therefore necessary that the Association works towards becoming a World Class one, in line with the University’s corporate vision.
Talking to the Executive Board of the Association when they visited him in his office on November 14, 2016, Vice Chancellor, Peter Mbithi indicated that his office is open all the time to receive views and offer assistance to the Association. He added that he wished to see the Association assist University Management in uplifting the University’s image and competitiveness.
Pointing to the highly competitive environment the University is operating in nationally and globally, the Vice chancellor said the University needs “protection” and assistance in strengthening its brand. In this regard, the Vice Chancellor said that the University is committed to assist the Association hire a suitable person for the post Executive Director, currently vacant.
Talking during the early morning meeting, the UONAA Chairman Isaac Awuondo said that UONAA needed to profile itself so it supports the University and not to expect University of Nairobi to support it all the time.
The Chairman, however asked the Vice Chancellor to consider giving the Association space at Main Campus to facilitate greater access to members and for ease of recruiting new members. He also requested for the official formalization of transfer of assets given to UONAA by the University.
Since inception in 2005, UONAA has received considerable support from the University of Nairobi in terms of finances, staffing, office space and donation of assets. This partnership is set to grow as UONAA moves ahead in the realization of its three core projects i.e. construction of Alumni Center, University scholarships and Endowment Fund. In future, the Association intends to commercialize it activities at the Alumni Center for self sustainability and aiding other projects of UONAA and the University.
Among other Board members present were Dr. Ann Aseey, (Vice Chair), Ms. Mildred Owuor, (Treasurer) Mr. Barrack Muluka (Organizing Secretary) and Johnson Kinyua, Director, University Advancement.
