IBM research to build center of excellence

International technology giant, International British Machines (IBM), is keen to establish a center of excellence in government technologies in Africa in collaboration with the University of Nairobi.

This was revealed when Mr. Kumar Bhaskuran, from IBM paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi in his office today, Friday, April, 7, 2017.

IBM has been working closely with the University of Nairobi and has supported various projects, key among them ; sponsoring doctorate students, supporting Nairobi Innovation Week, working with the College of Health Sciences in health informatics and the Institute of Climate Research.

IBM research works on artificial intelligence, cognitive computing, data analytics, machine learning, to derive meaning out of vast amounts of data and to develop solutions in the fields of education, healthcare, financial sector and environment.  

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, requested for the establishment of a center of excellence for research at the University. He noted that the facility will go a long way in helping industry, government, students and researchers to build solutions to the problems affecting the African continent.

Also present during the meeting were: Prof. William Ogara, Director, Center for International Programs and Links, Mr. John Orindi, Director, Corporate Affairs and Mr. Leonard Musyoka, Senior Assistant Registrar, Transformation Performance Reforms Unit, (TPRMU).
