Mabati Rolling Mills Collaboration

Mabati Rolling Mills, MRM and the University of Nairobi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, which will guide how the two institutions work together on various programs including  student internships, research on roofing solutions and construction materials.

University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi , who was represented by Prof. Peter Ngau, Principal, College of Architecture and Engineering, said that the two institutions can work together to find solutions that is relevant to the local market.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Harry Njagi, Head of Marketing – Roofing, Mabati Rolling Mills noted that MRM have incorporated world standards in their rooting solutions and it’s time to collaborate with  a world class university like  UoN to produce affordable building materials in Kenya.  The vision of MRM is to be a building solutions company and not just a roofing solutions provider. MRM is looking at bridging the gap and fulfilling the demand for housing needs in Kenya which currently stands at 200,000 houses per year.

“Unlike the developed world that have found solutions to their housing needs, Kenya still lags behind. Mabati Rolling Mills is working at finding an African solution to the African housing needs and not importing technology from India or Japan, “said Mr. Njagi. He noted that as a company, MRM need to provide leadership in the construction industry. It is in that regard that MRM wish to work with Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Scientists in doing research on housing solutions.

Several parts of Kenya have experienced challenges of roof corrosion and wind blowing off roofs. MRM would like to partner with UoN to map corrosion and wind zones in Kenya.

Also present during the meeting were: Prof. Mbuthia, Dean, School of Engineering, Prof. Wiliam Ogara, Director, Centre for International Programs and Links and Mr. John Orindi, Director, Corporate Affairs among others.
