VC discuss with ODEL Staff on e-Learning

The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi is looking at improving open distance and e-learning in order to enable more people have access to higher education in the country.

Speaking during a luncheon for ODeL Campus staff on Feb, 12, 2017 at the Vice-Chancellors Parlor, Prof. Peter Mbithi urged the Director of the newly formed Campus together with the staff members to find new ways of increasing student enrollment and work closely with the county governments to enable as many people as possible to have access to knowledge and education.

“Technology has changed how education is carried out worldwide. I would urge you to tap into technology and innovation. You have a chance to improve access to education in the country.
 E-Learning is the pillar for improving access to education with the resources at our disposal, “said the Vice-Chancellor.

The Vice-Chancellor urged staff members to be loyal to the course they believe in. “Your calling is higher. Your value system should be higher, uphold University of Nairobi values, standards, strategy and work to achieve the performance contract targets”, he added.

Among the issues discussed at the meeting include; human resource capacity, procurement challenges, finances, examinations administration, teamwork and efficient service delivery.

ODeL Director, Prof. Christopher  Gakuu, highlighted the achievements made by the Campus since its inception in February, 2017. The campus has improved student enrollment significantly, at all levels from Bachelors to Masters to Doctorate . In fact, out of the 2017 graduation class, ODeL produced 42% of the graduands.

The Campus has embraced aggressive campaign methods to ensure that the whole university adopts digital learning. The Campus has secured collaboration with technology giants, Microsoft, to digitize learning and teaching at the University.
