Launch of Career Services Office at the University of Nairobi


The University of Nairobi Career Services Office has officially been launched by the Education Cabinet Secretary, Amb. Amina Mohamed. The launch which was graced by industry players and professionals, University of Nairobi partners, staff and students was held on August 13, 2018.

Speaking during the launch, Ambassador Amina Mohammed, observed that the launch of Career Services Office was one of the initial projects she embarked on upon her appointment as the Education Cabinet Secretary. It was a result of independent discussions with many stakeholders and the office will go a long way in bridging the skills gap, helping students develop their soft skills, personal development and branding, addressing issues of internships, apprenticeship and jobs. The Career Service Office will as well also create an opportunity for interactions and networking between students and employers.  

Amb. Amina Mohammed promised that as a Ministry, they will benchmark CSO Office with the best performing academic institutions like Oxford University and Harvard University. “Harvard and Oxford have Career Services Office which are performing very well. Chinese leading University, Tsinghua University has a Career Services Office which is performing very well. We shall benchmark with them. They shall be a model to emulate,” she said. The CS expressed her hope that the CSO will help improve industry relations. “I hope the private sector will participate in pre-graduation events and equip students with work skills,” he opined. 

On entrepreneurship, the CS urged students to venture into entrepreneurship and create startups. It has been observed that small and medium enterprises create the bulk of the jobs in the country.

To develop the skills gap, Amb. Amina Mohammed proposed that every constituency in the country will have one Technical and Vocational Training College, (TVCs) hence a total of 290 TVCs around the country. In addition to that, every county will have a polytechnic where young people can acquire technical skills. “The fees in these colleges will be capped at Kshs. 56,420 with the government giving Kshs. 30,000 and Kshs. 26,420 from Higher Education Loans Board – HELB. Without developing our technical skills, Kenya will experience job saturation in the year 2030 as there will be too many managers with less technical knowhow.

The University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi while quoting the former President of South Africa and apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela, noted that education is a great tool of personal development. With education, the child of a farm worker can become president. “Education can make everything possible. It can transition an individual from learning to earning,“ she said.

The Chancellor’s Career Fair is organized around two themes: job market and entrepreneurship.

The Chancellor revealed that the best innovations during the career fair will be awarded. She as well noted that “Kazi Connect” will be launched soon, a platform that will allow employers to engage all the 84,000 UoN students and it will unlock thousands of jobs.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, stressed on the need to work closely with the industry to solve their problems via research and innovations. He also called upon the industry experts to be adjunct lecturers and help in shaping students and imparting skills.

The Chancellor’s Career Fair was attended by industry players and corporations like Google, Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, McKinsey, Grant Thornton, Nation Media Group, Jambo Pay, Comcraft Industries among others.
