The University of Nairobi Management and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU)–UoN Chapter have formally signed the Internal Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2017–2021 period, marking the adoption of its first addendum after extensive consultations between the two parties. The agreement, signed on Monday, March 23, 2026, brings to an end a seven-year impasse.

The negotiation process was officially initiated on August 12, 2024, with the Joint Negotiation Committee comprising representatives from the University Council and UASU engaging in a series of discussions over a period of approximately eighteen months.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, UASU Secretary General Dr. Maloba Wekesa commended the University Management for its dedication and goodwill throughout the negotiation process, which ultimately led to the conclusion of the agreement.

In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor (Ag), Prof. Margaret Hutchinson underscored the importance of inclusive engagement and adherence to due process. She reaffirmed Management’s commitment to ensuring the full implementation of the CBA, noting that the agreement reflects a shared resolve to foster a supportive working environment that enables staff to excel while advancing the University’s mandate.

As part of the implementation process, the agreed addendum will be submitted to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for issuance of a No Objection letter. It will then be forwarded for registration at the Employment and Labour Relations Court in accordance with the Labour Relations Act, 2007, before taking effect.

The meeting concluded with a call for the immediate rollout of the non-financial provisions of the agreement, while the remaining components undergo the necessary statutory procedures.

Among those present at the signing were Council Chair representatives Prof. Ayub Gitau, Prof. John Mande, Prof. Moses Nyangito, Prof. Lilac Osanjo, as well as members of the UASU-UoN leadership.
