The University of Nairobi received a generous donation of KES 2 million from the Chinese Property Developer Association (Kenya) on January 21, 2026, during a cheque presentation ceremony held at the University.
The cheques were presented by Ms Wen Hui, who was representing the Chairman of the Chinese Property Developer Association (Kenya), Mr Zhang Jiaping. They were received on behalf of the Vice Chancellor (Ag), Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Development, Prof. Jackson Maalu.
Also in attendance at the ceremony were the Dean of Students, Mr Johnson Kinyua, and the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, Prof. Wang Shangxue, underscoring the strong and growing ties between the University and its Chinese partners.
The contribution will support 40 deserving students, significantly easing their financial burden and enabling them to focus fully on their academic pursuits and personal development. The initiative aligns with the University of Nairobi’s commitment to inclusive education and student welfare, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder talented students from achieving their full potential.

Speaking during the ceremony, Prof. Maalu expressed gratitude to the Chinese Property Developer Association (Kenya) for the timely support, noting that the donation reflects a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and the empowerment of young people through education. He emphasised that such partnerships play a critical role in strengthening the University’s capacity to nurture future leaders and professionals.

In her remarks, Ms Wen Hui said the Association strongly believes in investing in education as a catalyst for social and economic development. “The donation underscores the Association's commitment to empowering youth through education. This is an investment in the future of society,” she added. Ms Hui also expressed the Association’s desire to deepen its partnership with the University of Nairobi through sustained collaboration that delivers lasting and mutually beneficial impact.
