The University of Nairobi Council has today announced a new Governance and Management Structure. The University of Nairobi Council, Chaired by Prof. Julia Ojiambo, is the governing organ established and provided for in the Universities Act No.42 of 2012 and the University of Nairobi Charter, 2013. The Council is responsible for ensuring that appropriate Governance and Management structures are in place and work to maintain the University's Corporate Integrity, reputation, and responsibility

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE REFORMS

The purpose of the reforms is to create a robust World-Class University that is vibrant, relevant, impactful, sustainable, and one that continues to realize its Vision, Mission, and Philosophy.

OBJECTIVES

Specific reform objectives include the following:

To enhance effectiveness and efficiency in governance, management and administrative functions within the university systems in order to effectively achieve the core mandate of higher education.

To Align and harmonize the governance and administrative organs to the core mandate of the University.

To put in place mechanisms that will enhance effective financial management systems with the objective of salvaging the university from the current financial/debt crisis and ensure financial sustainability.

To enhance global competitiveness

EXPECTED IMPACT FROM THE REFORMS

The reforms are expected to:

Increase effective and efficient service delivery in academic and management systems in the University.

Ensure cost-effective financial management systems

Eliminate the duplication of and bureaucracy in functions and delivery of services among University management units and systems.

Ensure prudent financial savings.

In its new structure, two new positions of Asscociate Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Associate Vice Chancellor, Research Innovation and Enterprise have been introduced replacing the five Deputy Vice Chancellor postions that were existing before.

The six Colleges which were headed administratively by a College Principal and a Deputy Principal have been replaced by faculties as the University seeks to actively engage in its core mandate of Teaching and Research.
