University of Nairobi Launches Cisco Cyber Security Center at Chiromo Campus
In a significant advancement for cybersecurity education and industry collaboration, the University of Nairobi, in partnership with global technology giant Cisco, has launched a state-of-the-art cybersecurity center. The launch event, held at the Chiromo Campus, was officiated by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Stephen Kiama, and the Principal Secretary for ICT, Engineer John Tanui.
A Hub for Cybersecurity Excellence
The new facility, dubbed The Edge Centre, is a pioneering Cybersecurity Technology Experience Centre. It is designed to bridge the gap between academic training and industry needs in the field of cybersecurity. The center aims to equip students and professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber threats, thus increasing the number of cybersecurity experts in Kenya and beyond.
Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration Program
The Edge Centre is part of Cisco’s global Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program, which collaborates with government and private sector leaders to develop sustainable, secure, and inclusive communities. With over 1,600 projects in 50 countries, Cisco’s CDA program focuses on generating new value for nations, industries, and residents through ethical and innovative technology solutions.
Enhancing Cybersecurity Training and Capabilities
Speaking at the official launch, Principal Secretary John Tanui highlighted the center’s crucial role in providing cybersecurity training and developing strategic in-country cybersecurity capabilities. “Cisco is launching its first cybersecurity Technology Experience Centre on the African continent. This is designed to serve as a hub for Cybersecurity Training and a showcase of state-of-the-art cybersecurity solutions,” Mr. Tanui said.
Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama emphasized the center’s importance in showcasing the latest cybersecurity threat intelligence solutions. “The center will support the government with cybersecurity architecture, use cases, validated designs, and the knowledge necessary to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber threats effectively,” he noted.
Collaboration for a Secure Future
The establishment of the Cisco Cyber Security Center is a collaborative effort between the ICT Authority (ICTA), Cisco, and the University of Nairobi. It reflects a shared commitment to enhancing cybersecurity capabilities and developing a robust pipeline of cybersecurity professionals. The center will leverage the expertise of the Cisco Networking Academy to deliver top-tier training and resources.
