The University of Nairobi has officially launched a ground-breaking collaboration with the Sikh Council of Africa to introduce the Study of Sikh Dharam Studies at the institution. The partnership was formalized through a signing ceremony between the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, and the Chairman of the Sikh Council of Africa, Mr. Jaswinder Singh Gharial, on February 21, 2025, at the iconic Taifa Hall.
The initiative marks a historic step in fostering interfaith education and cultural understanding within the academic landscape of Kenya. Through this partnership, the University of Nairobi will offer courses dedicated to Sikh Dharam Studies, allowing students to explore the rich spiritual, philosophical, and historical aspects of Sikhism.
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Hutchinson emphasized the importance of inclusivity in education and the university’s commitment to providing a diverse and comprehensive curriculum. "This collaboration is a testament to our dedication to academic excellence and cultural diversity. By incorporating Sikh Dharam Studies, we enrich our students’ perspectives and promote mutual understanding across different faiths," she said.
Mr. Gharial echoed these sentiments, highlighting the significance of the initiative in preserving and promoting Sikh heritage in Africa. "We are proud to partner with the University of Nairobi in this endeavor. Sikhism has a deep-rooted history in Africa, and through this program, we can educate future generations on its teachings, values, and contributions to society," he stated.
The launch ceremony was attended by representatives from the Sikh community, university faculty, and other distinguished guests. The program is expected to enhance interreligious dialogue, foster academic research on Sikhism, and provide students with an in-depth understanding of the faith’s principles and global impact.
